Sleeper Production

Wire cutting machine for the sleeper production

Machine description
In the long-line production of sleepers there are often only small spaces (approx. 170 mm) between the individual sleepers. The continuing tension wires in the sleepers have to be cut in these small spaces to separate the sleepers.

The cutting of the tension wires is normally being done manually under much noise and with a lot of work and time. Due to the development of the following machine it is now possible to have this work done fully automatic and with low noise.

The machine drives with its steel wheels on the outer edges of the sleeper mould. The chassis is divided into three areas. In the front area are the hydraulic unit and the switch cabinet. In the middle part is the sound insulated cutting unit and in the back is an industrial exhaust unit installed, which absorbs the cutting dust during cutting.

The cutting unit consists of two independent working lifting gears, which are hydraulically and on which ends the cutting wheels are placed. The lifting gears on the other hand are connected to a transverse gear. Additionally the lifting gears can be hydraulically spread and closed.

Due to the completely independent cutting units it is possible to cut the beginning and end of the sleeper row too. The transverse gear is necessary to cut both sleeper rows of the mould at the same crossing.

Process description

After the start of the automatic mode the machine is moving with high speed across the mould until a space is being detected in one of the two sleeper rows. Now the machine will slow down to low speed to position the machine accurate over the detected space. In the meanwhile the transverse gear will position the cutting unit over the sleeper row, where the space was detected.

The cutting units will be lowered until they just reach into the space between the sleepers. Then the cutting units will be spread until they are close to the sides of the sleepers.

The cutting wheel motors and the exhaust unit will be started and the actual cutting starts. After reaching the bottom position the cutting units will be raised and closed again and the cutting wheel motors and the exhaust unit will be turned off. The cutting units will be put in basic position again and the machine will continue the crossing with high speed until the next space will be detected.
